Florida Traffic Accidents

Florida’s expanding population and increasing traffic have brought more than just congestion—they’ve also contributed to a troubling rise in fatal bicycle accidents. In 2022 alone, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported over 7,000 bicycle crashes statewide, with hundreds resulting in tragic deaths. Gainesville and Alachua County are not immune to this trend.

As more residents turn to cycling for transportation, recreation, or fitness, the risks on the road have grown, especially on busy corridors like University Avenue, Archer Road, and State Road 26. Several dangerous driving behaviors continue to place bicyclists in harm’s way:

Driver Inattention: Distracted driving remains a leading cause of collisions, with motorists often failing to notice cyclists until it’s too late.

Failure to Yield: Many drivers overlook the legal rights of cyclists, especially at intersections and crosswalks, leading to deadly right-of-way violations.

Speeding: Excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases the severity of impact in a crash, often with fatal consequences for vulnerable road users like cyclists.

Poor Visibility: Many fatal crashes occur at night or in low-light conditions when bicyclists are harder to see, even with reflective gear or lights.

For families and loved ones, a fatal bicycle accident is more than just a statistic—it’s a devastating loss. Navigating the aftermath can be overwhelming, especially when facing funeral costs, insurance delays, and unanswered questions about what went wrong.
