Florida Traffic Accidents
With a sprawling highway network and one of the largest populations in the U.S., Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of traffic accidents. In 2022, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported more than 401,000 crashes statewide, and over 250,000 of those resulted in injuries.
So, what’s behind Florida’s alarming crash rate?
- Tailgating: Following other vehicles too closely is one of the leading causes of rear-end collisions, particularly in congested areas like Fort Lauderdale. Maintaining a safe distance can drastically reduce your risk of a crash.
- Aggressive Driving: Speeding, weaving through traffic, and failing to yield are dangerous driving habits that frequently lead to avoidable accidents.
- Driver Fatigue: Exhaustion behind the wheel impairs judgment and slows reaction time—both of which increase the risk of a serious accident.
- Road Construction Confusion: With constant development and shifting traffic patterns, construction zones often lead to confusion and unexpected hazards, especially when signage is inadequate or poorly placed.
