Florida Traffic Collisions

With more than 275,000 lane miles of roadway and a population exceeding 22 million, Florida ranks consistently among the top states for traffic accidents. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), 2022 saw over 401,500 reported crashes—and the trend hasn’t slowed. In early 2023, preliminary data indicated an average of 1,100 crashes per day, with more than 3,500 traffic-related fatalities annually.

Even more troubling, over 60% of these crashes resulted in injuries, leaving tens of thousands of Floridians dealing with physical pain, emotional trauma, and financial fallout.

Several recurring patterns contribute to Florida’s alarming accident rate:

  • Tailgating and Close Following: High-traffic areas like Orlando, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale are notorious for rear-end collisions caused by impatient or distracted drivers who follow too closely. Maintaining a safe distance is critical—especially in unpredictable stop-and-go traffic.
  • Aggressive Driving and Road Rage: Speeding, frequent lane changes without signaling, and running red lights are common on Florida’s roads. These behaviors account for a significant portion of high-speed and multi-vehicle accidents.
  • Drowsy Driving: In a state where tourism and shift work are prevalent, driver fatigue is a serious problem. Studies show that drowsy drivers can be as impaired as those under the influence of alcohol.
  • Distracted Driving: Despite growing awareness and updated texting-while-driving laws, distracted driving remains one of the top causes of car crashes in Florida. In 2022 alone, over 53,500 crashes were attributed to driver distraction.
  • Construction Zones and Poor Signage: Florida’s rapid development means road construction is a constant. Temporary lanes, uneven pavement, and confusing detours can throw even the most seasoned driver off course.
