Florida Pedestrian Accidents
Florida continues to see a high number of fatal pedestrian accidents each year. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, hundreds of pedestrians lose their lives on the state’s roads annually. Crowded streets, fast-moving traffic, and a mix of local drivers and tourists contribute to the dangers faced by those on foot.
Several common—and often preventable—factors play a role in these deadly crashes:
Failure to Yield: Pedestrians are frequently struck when drivers fail to yield at intersections or crosswalks. Misjudging who has the right-of-way can quickly turn into a fatal situation.
Distracted Driving: Using a phone, adjusting navigation systems, or other distractions behind the wheel remain leading causes of pedestrian fatalities. Even a brief lapse in attention can have deadly consequences.
Speeding and Aggressive Driving: Excessive speeds make it harder for drivers to stop in time and increase the severity of injuries in collisions with pedestrians. Tailgating, abrupt lane changes, and other reckless behaviors further increase the risk.
Unsafe Road Conditions: Poor lighting, lack of sidewalks or crosswalks, and high-speed roadways contribute to many pedestrian deaths, particularly at night when visibility is limited.
Driving Under the Influence: Alcohol and drug impairment significantly increase the likelihood of fatal pedestrian crashes by slowing reaction times and impairing judgment.
